Jennifer Uloko Builds YangaBeauty into an African Beauty Brand Rooted in Local Needs and Global Ambition

Date:

Jennifer Lisa Uloko, Founder and CEO of YangaBeauty, is building an African beauty brand around a simple but powerful belief: Nigerian women should not have to look beyond their own market to find beauty products that understand their skin, needs and realities.

Founded in 2014, YangaBeauty emerged from Uloko’s own experience as a makeup artist and her frustration with the limited range of quality beauty products and shades available for women of African heritage.

More than a decade later, that early observation has evolved into a growing beauty business with an expanding retail presence, including a new store in Ikeja, Lagos, and ambitions to take the brand into markets across Africa and beyond.

Uloko’s journey into entrepreneurship began with a problem rather than a conventional business plan.

As a makeup artist, she frequently tested beauty products on herself before recommending them to clients. An adverse reaction to an eyeliner, followed by a similar experience involving a colleague who suffered a reaction to a lip gloss, prompted her to question the quality and safety of products available in the market.

There was another challenge she encountered repeatedly in her work: finding foundation shades that properly matched the diverse skin tones of her clients.

Instead of viewing these challenges simply as frustrations, Uloko began to see them as opportunities to create better solutions.

That thinking eventually led to YangaBeauty, a brand created specifically with women of African heritage in mind.

“I wanted to build a beauty brand that understood our skin, our needs and our reality, while giving women access to quality products they could trust,” Uloko said.

The company’s growth has since expanded beyond its original product proposition to include a broader customer experience.

YangaBeauty’s stores are designed to give customers the opportunity to explore, test and discover beauty products in an environment where they feel comfortable rather than judged or pressured.

For Uloko, that experience is as important as the products themselves.

Whether a customer is a professional makeup artist, beauty enthusiast or simply exploring products for the first time, the brand seeks to create an environment where she can find solutions suited to her individual needs.

The opening of YangaBeauty’s latest store in Ikeja carries particular significance for Uloko.

Having grown up in Ikeja and purchased one of her first beauty products around Allen Avenue, returning years later as the founder of a growing beauty company represents a personal milestone as well as a business achievement.

She describes the development as a reflection of YangaBeauty’s broader growth — from its products and retail footprint to the systems, people and capabilities required to support the next stage of the company.

The company’s ambition now extends beyond Nigeria.

Uloko wants YangaBeauty to become a proudly African brand capable of competing on a global stage, with expansion into markets including Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada forming part of the company’s broader vision.

For her, continental expansion is not simply about opening stores or placing products in new markets.

It requires understanding consumers, building strong distribution networks, developing the right partnerships and ensuring that the brand experience remains consistent as YangaBeauty enters new territories.

Africa represents a significant opportunity.

The continent’s young population and expanding beauty market are creating increasing demand for products and brands that understand African consumers and reflect their experiences.

YangaBeauty is seeking to position itself within that opportunity by combining local understanding with global standards.

As the company grows, Uloko says investment in people, technology, product development, distribution and internal systems will be critical.

She is particularly focused on building a team capable of taking the business beyond its current stage while maintaining the quality and customer experience that underpin the brand.

For Uloko, sustainable growth matters more than simply growing quickly.

The objective is to create the foundations that will allow YangaBeauty to enter new markets successfully and deliver consistently on its brand promise.

That ambition is also reflected in how she defines success.

Rather than pursuing recognition for its own sake, Uloko wants YangaBeauty to become a trusted name associated with quality, innovation, inclusivity and exceptional customer experience.

She also wants the company’s impact to extend beyond the products it sells through job creation, talent development and contributions to the wider beauty industry.

Faith remains another important part of Uloko’s approach to entrepreneurship.

She describes her faith as an anchor during periods of uncertainty, helping her navigate difficult decisions while maintaining the discipline to continue building even when the path ahead is unclear.

For her, entrepreneurship requires both diligence and trust — doing the work while recognising that not every outcome can be controlled.

Ultimately, Uloko sees YangaBeauty as part of a bigger story about what African women can build.

“Nigerian women are not limited by where they start,” she said.

Her vision is for YangaBeauty to demonstrate that businesses can be created from local problems, built around African realities and eventually compete anywhere in the world.

For Uloko, African entrepreneurship is not only about creating successful businesses. It is about solving relevant problems, creating jobs, developing people and building companies capable of creating value beyond their founders.

That is the future she is working towards with YangaBeauty: a trusted African beauty brand, built from Nigeria, serving African consumers and ultimately taking African beauty to the world.
